Dr Jess Luo, Assistant Professor in the Department of Education Policy and Leadership, has been awarded the Editors’ Choice Award for 2025 for her outstanding paper published in the international journal Teaching in Higher Education. Her paper, titled “How Does GenAI Affect Trust in Teacher-Student Relationships? Insights from Students’ Assessment Experiences,” was selected by the journal’s Executive Editorial team as the best among seven nominated papers.
Dr Luo's study addresses critical issues regarding the disparities in the use of Generative AI tools between staff and students, highlighting the dynamics of power in higher education. She notes that while students are typically required to disclose their use of Generative AI in their work, similar transparency is rarely expected from staff regarding their utilization of these tools. This lack of accountability poses significant challenges that need to be addressed, as the relationships between staff and students are fundamental to effective teaching.
“I am delighted to receive the Editors’ Choice Award. As a researcher focused on the social, relational, and ethical implications of advanced technologies, I aim to enhance teaching and learning in higher education through AI technologies,” stated Dr Luo.
Dr Luo obtained her doctoral degree from the University of Hong Kong as a recipient of the Philip KH Wong Foundation Postgraduate Fellowship. Prior to that, she completed her MPhil at the University of Cambridge as a fully funded International Cambridge Trust Scholar. Her research has been published in high-impact international journals such as Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, Educational Research Review, and Teaching in Higher Education. In recognition of her research performance, she was awarded the 2023 HKU Foundation Publication Award (RPG). She is also the Principal Investigator of several external and internal research grants on GenAI and higher education, including one funded by the Hong Kong Research Grant Council under the prestigious Early Career Scheme.
Teaching in Higher Education is an international, peer-reviewed academic journal established in 1996, published eight times a year by Taylor & Francis.
