In our research interviews, it is often found that transgender individuals face multiple biases, one of which stems from transgender bias among social service providers. Transgender individuals generally refer to those who do not identify with their assigned sex at birth or with the binary gender identities of male and female. "Transgender bias" refers to the belief that only cisgender identities are valid. People who hold this view often harbor stereotypes and prejudices against transgender and non-binary individuals, and treat them differently. For example, some social workers lack knowledge about the development of transgender youth and insist on treating a transgender girl affected by gender dysphoria according to her assigned sex at birth. This leads the transgender girl to experience anxiety and depression due to the social worker's denial of her gender identity.
